RTP, RNG & House Edge

Two ideas explain most of how casino games behave: return-to-player and the house edge. They are the same coin from opposite sides.

Return-to-player (RTP)

RTP is the share of everything staked that a game is designed to return to players over an enormous number of plays. A game at 96% RTP is built to hand back, on average, $96 of every $100 wagered — measured across millions of rounds, never a single session.

House edge

The house edge is simply 100% minus RTP: 4% in that example. It is the built-in margin that makes the operator the statistical winner over time, even as individual players win and lose. That is the precise sense in which “the house always wins.”

Random number generators

An RNG decides each outcome independently of the last. A machine is never “due” — earlier spins have no bearing on the next. In regulated markets, RNGs are certified by independent test houses before a game is allowed to go live.

Volatility

Volatility describes how payouts are spread: low-volatility games pay small and often, high-volatility games pay rarely but larger. Two games can share an RTP and feel nothing alike.
