The move from counter and casino floor to phone and laptop is the clearest trend in the industry, and Canada sits mid-transition. Ontario’s regulated online channel alone handled C$82.7 billion in wagers last fiscal year — a scale that simply did not exist in a licensed form before 2022.
How Canada compares
For context, online reached 39% of gaming revenue in Europe in 2024 and 30% of US commercial gaming, while the global online share is closer to 17%. Canada’s national figure is hard to pin precisely because of the provincial split, but Ontario’s trajectory mirrors the mature-market pattern: online growing faster than retail, year after year.
“Online share” depends on whether sports betting and lotteries are included; each figure here is labelled with its scope and source.
